What are dental veneers?

Veneers are thin, custom-made mouldings that cover the front of teeth. They are crafted from tooth-coloured materials to deliver a natural, bright smile.

While there are many applications for veneers, we find the greatest success is achieved when they are prescribed to patients who want to address one or a number of the following concerns:

  • Close spaces between teeth
  • Restore broken or chipped teeth
  • Cover unsightly, stained or washed out fillings
  • Whiten permanently stained or discoloured teeth
  • Correct uneven or crooked teeth
  • Correct minor twists and overlaps, as well as small gaps

The materials used to create dental veneers have a tooth-like appearance, making them natural looking. It is virtually impossible to tell the difference between a veneer and a natural tooth. They are also long lasting, polishable, and resistant to all the usual causes of tooth staining, including coffee, tea, and cigarette smoke.

Dental veneers are fully custom-designed for you and require only a minimal amount of natural tooth to be altered. And the big bonus? They can be matched to make even the darkest teeth appear to be bright white.

With advances in dental materials occurring all the time, you can expect your veneers to last many years. However, patients should be aware that while veneers strengthen teeth, it’s wise to avoid opening nut shells, chewing on bones or any other matter that may cause the veneers to chip or crack.

Unlike most bonding materials, veneers will not change colour over time, however, your Dental Art dentist will provide an estimate of how long veneers will last in your mouth. Our commitment to patients is to provide treatment that endures and we bring this to each person who chooses to invest in themselves through a dental veneer treatment plan. We even offer dental finance to cover the cost of veneer treatment.

What’s the difference between porcelain and composite veneers?

Dental Art offers two types of dental veneers – porcelain or ceramic and composite resin.

Dental veneers made from composite resin are prepared applied in the chair. Porcelain veneers, made from a translucent, ceramic material, are prepared in a laboratory and then fixed into the tooth.

Benefits of composite veneers include that they are a more cost effective option and generally quicker to make. Porcelain veneers are stronger, look more natural and last longer. If you require veneers, our dentists will speak to you about the options to help you decide which is best for you.

Is it time to consider dental veneers?

Veneers are a worthwhile alternative to traditional dental crowns . They cover unattractive gaps and can mask stained, misshapen or crooked teeth so if you are affected by one of these, veneers may be an option for you. We do advise patients who are also considering teeth whitening that treatment should be completed before dental veneers. This ensures the dental veneer colour matches the new colour of the teeth.
